I’ve never been a fan of green screen for corporate use. When I see it, I wonder why they did not make the effort to simply find a decent real background in the first place. Obviously the weather man on t’telly needs a green screen for his map, as does your Marvel super hero because, as you may know, they can’t actually fly. But for corporate productions, I want to see the real world, nicely lit with well composed framing, and this has always been our MO for the last decade or so.

So when https://www.laserlearning.co.uk/ approached us about making videos for their e-learning courses against a green-screened white background I obviously kept my opinions to myself and jumped in with enthusiasms. I very much liked Chris who runs the company and has a remarkable track record in educational entrepreneurialism. As an ex-teacher what’s not to like?

Green screen filming

Getting a greenscreen to key (or any colour to key – it always used to be blue in the old days) is a bit tricky and you can clearly see green fringes in the old Dad’s Amy and vintage Doctor Who’s when the technique started to be used in earnest 40 years ago. The trick is to create a clean, even light on the green and to ensure none of it is reflected onto the subject. Who should NOT be wearing green, just in case you were wondering. 😄

Kevin Duala, he of One Show fame, was our presenter and did a spectacular job of working through the  20 or so scripts we did each day. I can recommend him without hesitation.

As is our practice, we were able to turn around the complicated edits, shot in 4k to enable zooming in and out, in a few days and the films now grace the Laser Learning catalogue.
