Stuart Boreham is a Director of the Green Lane Association, a user group of 6,000 members concerned with preserving rights of way across the UK’s network of 20,000 unsurfaced byways and roads that have vehicle access rights – ‘Green Lanes’ as they are known.

Each year Boreham Media is commissioned to make films to promote the work of the Association and to illustrate to the public and authorities how Green Laners use and access these often remote and beautiful routes.

For 2025 we had the idea of filming a real time journey across a lane, crafted in such a way that the viewers felt they were alongside the passengers in the car and experiencing the trip themselves.

We chose a vehicle with many rigging points – a soft top military Land Rover – and fitted it with 5 GoPro cameras of different kinds, clamped to various parts of the framework. In addition, we wired each person in the vehicle with high quality Cos11 Lav mics and belt transmitters and placed the receivers in the car feeding a 4 channel audio recorder.

We had hoped to monitor the sound by having the recorder in a second vehicle but the volume of rock in the remote Welsh location caused too many radio dropouts, even at a relatively short range.

The first run was completed with cameras on the car and passengers recorded live. The second run was used to capture drone footage, and the third run to secure footage from the external cameras on legs.

Although the shoot was not one take, the recording (audio and visual) from take one was made in real time, with the cutaways added after.

It was a complicated shoot with many potential points of technical failure. The edit was also very time consuming, and simply getting such a large number of cameras and takes assembled on the edit suite in a way that made it playable was a multi-day challenge. However, eventually it all came together.

Stuart enlisted his long-term hero, sound recordist Geoff Sample, to provide the nature track that simulated what it felt like to be on that sunny moor, and after many edit iterations we were done.

The family were the stars. They were natural and fun and their enjoyment of the experience combined with our virtual presence in the car as viewers is what makes it all work so well. We’ve not attempted anything like this before and neither has anyone in the Green-Laning community. It’s exciting to be part of a First for Britain!

Liz Parks, Communications Manager at Green Lane Association left her experience of using Boreham Media:

“Boreham Media have produced a series of films for the Green Lane Association and we have been delighted with the results. Each film has had a specific focus and Boreham Media have always grasped each brief quickly and expertly, producing high-quality films which have been hugely helpful to our work around countryside access.

As well as producing full-length versions for our YouTube channel, Boreham Media have also sent us short clips for social media which have proved highly effective for us to extend our reach and engagement. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services.”
